چکیده

Nutrient spiraling in theory and application provides a framework for comparing nutrient retention efficiency of urban streams to relatively unaltered streams. Previous research indicated that streams of the southwestern USA deserts are highly retentive of N because of N limitation, high productivity, and high channel complexity (in particular, extensive transient storage associated with the hyporheic zone). Most southwestern urban streams have extensively modified channels and experience N loading from urban runoff and inputs of NO3-contaminated groundwater. Therefore, we predicted southwestern urban streams are neither N-limited nor retentive. For some urban streams, however, restoration efforts reestablish flow in long-dry channels, create nonstructural flood-management solutions, and design riparian areas as a public recreation amenity. These human modifications may, in part, restore N retention functions if channel complexity and heterogeneity are as important to N retention efficiency as believed. We conducted experimental tracer studies using 15NNO3, as part of the Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment (LINX) project, and several separate nutrientaddition experiments (using slight increases in NO3 concentration), to evaluate N retention in southwestern urban streams. We present preliminary results of those experiments, comparing results to similar experiments in unaltered streams to test our predictions. Our results allow an evaluation of the use of nutrient spiraling metrics as a tool for assessing the status of stream ecosystem services in urban restoration projects.

Nitrate retention and removal in Mediterranean streams bordered by contrasting land uses: a 15N tracer study

We used 15N-labelled nitrate (NO−3 ) additions to investigate pathways of nitrogen (N) cycling at the wholereach scale in three stream reaches with adjacent forested, urban and agricultural land areas. Our aim was to explore among-stream differences in: (i) the magnitude and relative importance of NO−3 retention (i.e. assimilatory uptake) and removal (i.e. denitrification), (ii) the relative co...

Assessing stream restoration effectiveness at reducing nitrogen export to downstream waters.

The degradation of headwater streams is common in urbanized coastal areas, and the role these streams play in contributing to downstream pollution is a concern among natural resource managers and policy makers. Thus, many urban stream restoration efforts are increasingly focused on reducing the downstream flux of pollutants. In regions that suffer from coastal eutrophication, it is unclear whet...

Effects of Urbanization on Nutrient Biogeochemistry of Aridland Streams

Land-use and land-cover change affect the biogeochemistry of stream ecosystems in numerous ways, both direct and indirect. Changes result from hydrologic modifications, including direct alterations of flow regimes and hydrologic flowpaths and indirect changes in hydrologic patterns via increased impervious cover in contributing areas of watersheds. Direct changes to channel morphology (i.e., re...

Nutrient dynamics in streams and the role of J-NABS

Nutrient dynamics in streams has been an important topic of research since the 1960s. Here we review this topic and the significant role played by J-NABS in its development. We limit this review almost exclusively to studies of N and P because these elements have been shown to limit productivity in streams. We use the expression nutrient dynamics for studies that included some measures of biolo...

The saturation of N cycling in Central Plains streams: N experiments across a broad gradient of nitrate concentrations

We conducted NO3 – stable isotope tracer releases in nine streams with varied intensities and types of human impacts in the upstream watershed to measure nitrate (NO3 ) cycling dynamics. Mean ambient NO3 – concentrations of the streams ranged from 0.9 to 21,000 lg l NO3 – N. Major N-transforming processes, including uptake, nitrification, and denitrification, all increased approximately two to ...
